Natural systems, and especially biological ones, often display performances that are well beyond the corresponding state-of-the-art artificial counterparts. We can then take inspiration from biology and physics to devise novel design principles for a new generation of artificial systems, with applications in robotics, computer science and multiagent dynamics. In the first part of this talk some of the recent models developed for describing animal locomotory modalities such as flight and crawling, will be presented, discussing how such models can both advance our understanding of the natural organisms and, on the other hand, be useful in robotics. In the second part of the talk some of the challenges we will be facing in the near future will be illustrated and how blending ideas from biology, physics and control theory can help in successfully tackling such problems.
