Synchronous vs Asynchronous on POETS

POETS is an experimental high-performance computing platform currently under development at ICL and with several other partner universities. This platform combines a new form of hardware, and a novel event-driven programming model, which allows for new and existing applications to be performed in entirely new ways.

I have discussed before about my asynchronous background, and the benefits asynchronous systems can have in the hardware world, and several of these can be carried over into the algorithm world. In this talk, I will discuss the POETS hardware and programming model, and how this platform can lend itself to applications which can be synchronous or asynchronous. A case study of a particle simulator will be used to identify the possible benefits of either form, and benchmarks will be provided to display the performance of these two methods.
