The binaural technique allows to create 3-dimensional audio using a simple pair of headphones. After a brief overview on binaural audio and on the most commonly known challenges with this technique (e.g. HRTF individualisation, binaural reverberation, simulation of distance, etc.), the presentation will focus on a few research projects in this area currently in progress in the Dyson School of Design Engineering at Imperial College London. These include the 3D Tune-In project (http://www.3d-tune-in.eu/), the development of a binaural spatialisation tool, available also as a web-based application, research into HRTF adaptation and selection, and finally research into acoustic augmented reality.
