Modelling and Operation of GB Power Transmission System and Electricity Market

Abstract – This presentation will give an overview of technical and commercial operations of GB power systems from System Operator’s perspective. National Grid’s roles and responsibilities across Transmission Owner (TO) and System Operator (SO) businesses will be introduced. Three main topics will be covered in transmission network operation, energy balancing mechanism, and electricity market operation. Modelling tools and approaches to facilitate technical and commercial operations will be introduced. Challenges, potential solutions and research opportunities in future power systems such as managing renewable energy sources, operability in distribution network, and electricity market reform are open for discussions.

Speaker – Dr. Xin Zhang is a senior power system engineer at National Grid UK. He has worked in various departments including Electricity National Control Centre (ENCC), Operational Planning and Market Operation. His working areas are power system planning, operation, and generation scheduling in short-term electricity market. He graduated with PhD in Electrical Power Engineering at University of Manchester in 2010, and MSc with distinction in 2007 at the same University. He studied BEng in Control Systems at Shandong University in China. Dr. Xin Zhang is a Chartered Engineer (CEng), author and co-author of more than 20 Journal articles and conference papers, holder of 1 UK patent, and a regular member of CIGRE B5 working group.
