Emergent Synchronisation on the POETS Architecture

If you take a river cruise in Donsol in the Philippines you may witness an incredible sight where fireflies along the river bank flash in near perfect synchronisation. Usually to achieve such a feat a global time signal would be required as a reference, but for the fireflies, one does not exist as there is no “maestro” firefly conducting them. Instead, simple local rules and interactions ensure that the phenomenon will eventually occur. In this talk, I will demonstrate our first attempts at applying such emergent synchronisation techniques to the POETS architecture. In the POETS architecture, we can create asynchronous application graphs with potentially hundreds of thousands of state machines across multiple FPGA devices. This makes creating a global notion of time challenging and the techniques used by the fireflies attractive for us.
