Traditional optimal control concerns the selection of a control function to minimize a cost. The cost depends on the state trajectory, which is the solution of a differential equation that depends on the control. Sometimes, optimal control problems are encountered of a different nature, in which the controlled differential equation includes time delay terms. Examples arise in chemical processing, where times delays are typically the result of transport phenomena, and in remote control, where time delays arise from latencies in communications channels. In this talk, optimality conditions for time delay optimal control problems, including time delay Maximum Principle and second order conditions, will be presented. The use of numerical methods to solve optimal control problems with delays will be illustrated by several case studies.
