In 2010, 1.6 billion cell phones were shipped worldwide, 19% of these were smartphones, and year over year smartphone growth was 72%, according to Gartner. Given this rapid adoption of smartphones amidst an international energy crisis, it has become increasingly important to improve smartphone energy efficiency. Besides the display, one of the most power hungry components in a smartphone is the power amplifier circuit. This power amplifier is the last circuit in the transmitter responsible for making the signal large before it is sent to the base station. Power amplifier circuit design is complicated, and it is difficult to meet the large gain, output power, and linearity specs required. This RF circuit design workshop will explain how to design a CMOS power amplifier and also present the results of a power amplifier chip we designed at Stanford University.
