The increasing weather dependence of energy systems introduces new challenges for power system operation and energy markets. In countries with significant renewable penetration, both supply and demand are highly weather sensitive introducing complex interdependencies in space, time and between variables. Energy forecasting plays a key role in balancing supply and demand, and involves quantifying and communicating uncertainty. This webinar will outline how energy forecasting is evolving, combining innovations from meteorology and data science, and explore the challenge of producing probabilistic forecasts for large energy systems.

Bio: Jethro Browell is a Lecturer at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, and an EPSRC Innovation Fellow. He has a master’s in Theoretical Physics from the University of St Andrews and a PhD in wind power forecasting from University of Strathclyde, where he has been a member of staff since 2015. His research interests cover all aspects of energy forecast production and use, with a focus on utilising probabilistic information to improve decision-making processes in the context of power system operation and participation in energy markets. Work to date has included wind, solar and hydropower forecasting, electricity demand and price forecasting, and access forecasting for maintenance applications. He has worked as a visiting researcher at the Technical University of Denmark and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (US), and in 2017 won 1st place in the EEM Wind Power Forecasting Competition. Jethro is active in the International Energy Agency, recently co-authoring an IEA “Recommended Practice Guide” for renewable power forecast evaluation. Jethro’s publications and other outputs can be found at www.jethrobrowell.com.
