The Global Burden of Disease study (GBD) has been a source of great information about health and risk factors for health / disease. I have helped coordinate the hearing element of GBD and have been intrigued to see the results nationally and sub-nationally that rate hearing problems as one of the most prevalent and impactful of diseases particularly for people of 60 years of age or older. Hearing therefore plays a much bigger role than has been appreciated in terms of morbidity of our population as more people live to be 60 years 70 years and older. It is therefore of increasing importance for innovation and research to tackle the problems that arise from these increasing numbers. Over the last year NHSE has been working on the Action Plan on Hearing Loss and as part of that the task and finish group for Research and Data has been assessing the key priorities for research to inform commissioners and researchers on what areas would bring the greatest return on investment. This work has now concluded and the key criteria and priorities for research have been established from the NHS and patient viewpoint. The seminar will present this work and discuss how it can be improved.
