Multiview 3D video - filming, coding and displaying

Stereoscopic 3D has become increasingly popular in the last few years, with ever more films in the box office and several 3DTV channels. Next generation 3D-TV will avoid special glasses and instead use optical multiplexing directly in the display. For this purpose, several perspective views of the scene are required to give a realistic and smooth 3D experience. An efficient representation is then video-plus-depth, which allows rendering of multiple side-views and so makes the format independent of the display design. The talk will cover a brief history of 3D films, depth cues for experiencing the third dimension, 3D multiview display technology, methods for filming multiview, and compression approaches for these formats.

About the speaker

Mårten Sjöström is a professor in signal processing at the Department of Information and Communication Systems at the Mid Sweden University, Sundsvall, Sweden. He is the founder and leader of the research group Realistic 3D. His current research interests are within 2D and 3D image and video processing, as well as system modeling and identification. He received the MSc in Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics from Linköping University, Sweden (1992), the Licentiate of Technology degree in Signal Processing from KTH , Stockholm, Sweden (1998), and the PhD degree in Modeling of Nonlinear Systems from EPFL , Lausanne, Switzerland (2001). He joined Mid Sweden University in 2001. In the course of his employment, he has been appointed Head of Division, Member of Department board, and he is currently highest representative for the research subject Computer and System Sciences at Mid Sweden University. He is also member of the managerial group of the Department of Information and Communication Systems.
