The creation of virtual acoustic environments has been focused on human listeners for enjoying the sound of music, movies, or computer games. Successful methods have been developed by exploiting the psychoacoustic properties of the human auditory system. However, more general applications like modeling of noise exposure, creation of zones of silence, or robot audition require methods which create physically correct sound fields in an extended listening area. Advanced design methods call for a unifying description of relevant sound reproduction methods. This talk presents an approach in this direction based on the concepts of multidimensional signals and systems. The focus is on the connection of acoustics, system theory, and signal processing. The talk is based on a recent book chapter co-authored by Sascha Spors and Jens Ahrens.

This talk is part of the COMMSP Seminar series.
