Modelling and optimization of Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) combine an internal combustion engine and an electrical drive system to improve the efficiency of power generation and utilization. Therefore HEVs may be designed to reduce fuel consumption and noxious emissions, as well as they may be designed to improve speed and acceleration performances. This talk will focus on the symbolic modelling of HEVs, a technique that leads to a very computationally efficient model and which is most suitable for vehicle optimization. Two cases studies will be illustrated: the lap time optimization of a race hybrid electric car and the optimization of power generation and management for a series hybrid electric car in everyday usage generation. The possibility and opportunity of training drivers to the eco-driving style will be addressed too.
