Methodology for Designing Statically Scheduled Application-Specific SDRAM Controllers using Constrained Local Search

Traditional SDRAM controllers implement static policies for reordering memory requests to optimize bandwidth, latency or power requirements. For many embedded applications, the sequence of memory requests made by the application doesn’t depend on the input data and thus static memory schedules which respect SDRAM timing requirements and optimally utilize the SDRAM interface can be developed. This talk will describe a constrained local-search based approach to finding ‘good’ schedules for SDRAM commands and a method for implementing those schedules within an FPGA . Results from this approach show up to a 4x reduction in the number of stall cycles incurred in loading data from an SDRAM device compared to a conventional dynamically scheduled SDRAM controller.
