Utility Fairness in 802.11 Mesh Networks

Despite their ubiquity, few results are available on utility fairness in 802.11 networks with most of the literature on wireless networks focussed on cellular networks and slotted Aloha wireless. Part of the reason for this is that the 802.11 rate region is known to be non- convex and so convex optimisation ideas cannot be applied directly. This talk will discuss some recent results establishing the log- convexity of the 802.11 rate region and their application to obtain elegant decentralised approaches for finding the max-min fair throughput allocation in 802.11 mesh networks. These approaches are suited to practical implementation on standard hardware and the talk will also discuss some recent experimental results.

Biography

Professor Doug Leith is Director of the Hamilton Institute at the National University of Ireland Maynooth. His research interests include TCP congestion control, analysis and resource allocation in 802.11 wireless networks, fairness and routing in mesh networks.
